Trip Overview

The 10-day Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a deeply transformative spiritual odyssey that harmoniously blends sacred devotion, stunning natural landscapes, and high-altitude Himalayan adventure. Revered as one of the most spiritually significant journeys in the world, this pilgrimage is more than just a physical trek it's a powerful inner journey toward self-realization, devotion, and peace. The yatra attracts devotees from various faiths including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon, all of whom consider Mount Kailash (6,638 meters) as the sacred axis mundi the center of the universe.
This meticulously designed itinerary ensures a safe and well-paced experience, allowing pilgrims to gradually acclimatize as they travel through the serene beauty of Nepal’s Himalayas and the vast, mystical expanses of Tibet’s high-altitude plateau. The journey begins in Kathmandu, where pilgrims receive a warm welcome and attend a trip briefing. They also visit ancient temples such as Pashupatinath and Buddhanilkantha, immersing themselves in the spiritual energy of the region before embarking on the higher altitudes.
From Kathmandu, the pilgrimage continues with a flight to Nepalgunj, followed by a mountain flight to the remote hill town of Simikot. A short helicopter ride then takes travelers to Hilsa, from where they cross into Tibet and continue to Taklakot (Purang). This region, located at an elevation of over 3,700 meters, serves as a crucial acclimatization stop before advancing toward Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash.
One of the most divine highlights of the yatra is reaching the sacred Lake Manasarovar (4,530 m), a pristine body of water that holds immense religious significance. Pilgrims take a ritual dip in its icy waters and perform puja while marveling at the first views of Mount Kailash standing tall in the backdrop.
The journey culminates in the revered Kailash Parikrama (circumambulation), a three-day trek around the holy mountain. Pilgrims traverse through Deraphuk, Dolma La Pass (5,600 m), Gauri Kund, and Zutulphuk, engaging in deep prayer and reflection at every step.
This sacred pilgrimage is not only a test of physical endurance but also a soul-stirring experience that leaves a lasting impression on every pilgrim. For many, the 10-day Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra marks the fulfillment of a lifetime’s spiritual aspiration a rare chance to walk on the path of the divine.

After an early breakfast between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, the group will fly from Simikot to Hilsa by helicopter, a breathtaking 25-minute journey through the deep Karnali River gorge and remote mountain valleys. DRIVE FROM MANASAROVAR TO YAMA DWARA - THEN TREK TO DERAPHUK

Breakfast: 07 am Morning religious activities at Lake Manasoravara like Puja/Hawn/ Bath at Manasoravara
Today is the highlighted day of our journey. The most exciting part, sacred circumambulation around Kailash, commences today from Yama Dwara. Morning, after breakfast, we depart from lake strand to Yama Dwara (also called 'Tarboche' in Tibetan) that demands approximately one & half hour to reach there. We should make a brief halt in Darchen because some travel documents obtained from local Police and Army officials as well as we have to make group entry in the region. From Darchen, it is another half an hour to reach Yama Dwara. Our Yaks, porters and horses are waiting here for us. Those who are making circumambulation around Kailash on feet can instantly proceed for Deraphuk; rest of members can commence their journey after taking their horse/s and porter/s. The Total walk to Deraphuk is for 5-6 hours, but the timing depends on your own pace. The route is relatively easy and flat but with a mild ascent. DAY 7

DERAPHUK TO ZUTULPHUK

Today, you have to cross a significant distance through the rugged portion of the trail around Mount Kailash before reaching Zutulpahuk. You have to commence your journey from Deraphuk very early in the morning. Right from the initial moment, the trail starts, leading you rapidly up; however, in between, it turns flat with a gentle ascend. Up to Dolma-La (5,600 m.), the path keeps you taking you up and up. Dolma La is the highest bit of this journey. From here onward, the trail leads you down to the valley floor. This particular portion of the trek is a rapid incline, and the track is full of boulders and screes, so one should pay continued attention while trekking down. While descending from Dolma La, we will pass alongside a small glacial pool, which is almost frozen from May through September. This is Gaurikunda. The legend of this pool is connected with Mata Parvati, the consort of lord Shiva.
Once we make a descent journey to the valley floor, the trail becomes flat and easy. The trail is easy and flat up to the Zutulphuk.
Overnight Norpel Guesthouse or Monastery guesthouse (Mud house) dormitory.
Dhiraphuk to Zutulphuk: 21 km (8 - 9 hours trek).
The highest point to cross over: Dolma La pass (5600 m./18,368 ft)

As usual, after morning meals, you will pack up your belongings and then be ready to move on to Darchen. It requires, presumably, 3 hours to reach the other end of the trail, where our vehicle is waiting to fetch you up. After getting together, all members will board the car and proceed to Taklakot. It takes presumably 2 hours to reach Taklakot, where you have to go through the immigration formalities. From Taklakot, a military person will accompany the group to escort to Hilsa. After having your luggage checked and going through some formalities again at the border, you will cross over the Suspension Bridge of the Karnali River and then enter the territory of Nepal. The drive from Taklakot to Hilsa (border) takes about 45 minutes.

Casual wears and comfortable walking shoes are the rule of Tibet. Be sure to bring warm clothing as nights and early mornings can be quite chilly to cold. Indian Pilgrims are advised strictly not to wear Sari during this Yatra. Bring all the film, medicine, cosmetics, personal toilet items etc. that you will need from home as these are difficult if not impossible to obtain on the way. A small first aid kit is also a good idea. Also quite useful is a route map, to know where you are going and have been each day.

Winter wear: Gore-Tex material, though expensive, is highly recommended. Down jacket, raincoat or windbreakers, thermal under wears, Jackets, warm trousers & woolen shirts (cotton will also do), warm sweaters, woolen gloves, sun hat, comfortable shoes, light leather boots in case of snow, woolen balaclava ('monkey cap') & scarf/dust mask to protect your eyes & nose from dust.

You may bring the snacks for along the way such as chocolates, dry fruits, toffees, glucose, namkeen etc. Strong water bottle & water purifying tablets. Personal medical kit and Diamox tablet (for high altitude). Sun glasses (to protect your eyes from UV, which is especially strong in high altitudes).
Sun block or sun screen lotion, wet tissues (Fresh-ones are excellent to wipe off the dust), clothes-line/clips, needle & thread, body spray (handy for smelly boots/feet and for a round of spray in the toilet tent!), toilet paper, torch & spare batteries, daypack (small shoulder bag), Camera & films, Binocular.

This is one of the toughest high altitude road journeys on earth. You Must be physically fit - no two ways about that. Generally, patients with asthma & heart problems have a problem acclimatizing to high altitudes. In your interests it is essential you should be examined by your doctor to know about your health condition and your ability to cope up with the rigors of high altitude travel for days in 'no road' conditions, extreme cold, dust, trekking to an altitude of 18500ft during the Parikrama, etc.

As you are traveling over high terrain, you are likely to experience symptoms and discomfort of altitude sickness (headache, loss of appetite, nausea, exhaustion, sleeplessness, breathlessness etc.) until your body adjusts to the elevation. This can take a couple of days or more depending on an individual. For this reason alone, we have made it mandatory to stay 2 nights at Mansarovar (4550M) moving on to the higher altitudes.
Drink plenty of water, be calm, and do not exercise. Do not drink alcohol or smoke prior to and during the tour. We also recommend you carry a strip of diamox tablets. We provide Gamow bag (a special equipment to prevent sickness from high altitude) on this tour.
