Trip Overview
One of the most beautiful and spiritually significant short treks in Nepal is the Panch Pokhari Trek, which is located in the Sindhupalchok district in the northeastern part of Kathmandu. This trekking trail will take you away from the crowded and popular trekking routes and into a serene and peaceful high-altitude terrain with forests, ridges, meadows, and sacred lakes. “Panch Pokhari” literally means Five Lakes, and the destination is located at an altitude of 4,100 meters, which makes it one of the highest wetlands in Nepal. The trek starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Chimti via Melamchi Bazaar and traditional villages and hillsides. From Chimti, the trekking trail gradually ascends through dense forests of rhododendron and pine trees. As the altitude increases, the surrounding area becomes more serene and open, which gives one an immense feeling of remoteness and being closer to nature. The trail is easy and clear for those who are moderately fit and want to experience the true Himalayan adventure without any climbing difficulties.
One of the major highlights of the trek is Tuppi Danda, which is a wide open ridge and a camping site. From here, one can witness the beauty of the rolling hills, the changing clouds, and the free flow of the mountain air. This is a great place for unwinding and taking in the peace and tranquility of the Himalayas. As the trek progresses towards Nasimpati, the scenery changes to an alpine type, with grasslands and rocks, making one feel as though they are closer to the sky. The true treasure of the trek is the Panch Pokhari site. This place is comprised of five crystal-clear lakes, which are surrounded by prayer flags, stone idols, and the high peaks of the Himalayas. This place is of great religious importance for both Hindus and Buddhists, and one can find a number of devotees during the Janai Purnima festival. The serene environment, combined with the reflections of the sky and the mountains, makes for a very spiritual and peaceful experience. The sunrise and sunset are truly breathtaking.
