Trip Overview

One of the most popular short treks in the Annapurna region, Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, is a great option for those who wish to experience the Himalayas, culture, and forests without embarking on a long or challenging trek. This 6-day trek starts and concludes at Pokhara, which is at an altitude of 822 meters. The jeep ride to Ulleri makes this trek comfortable and suitable for beginners. Pokhara, where this trek begins, is a picturesque town surrounded by lakes, offering breathtaking views of Machapuchhre and the Annapurna range. It’s a great place to begin the trek, as it’s a relaxed entry point into the Himalayas. From Pokhara, the journey to Ulleri at an altitude of 1,960 meters, a traditional Magar village located on a hill, can be covered by road, passing through picturesque villages and green hills. The road recently opened to this destination has made this trek easier, though it still maintains its traditional charm, culture, and picturesque stone houses and tea houses. The gradual increase in altitude ensures that the climber acclimatizes comfortably, surrounded by peaceful villages and green hills.
The trekking trail from Ulleri ascends through dense rhododendron and oak forests to Ghorepani, a distance of about 10 kilometers and an elevation of 2,860 meters. This part of the trek is famous for its natural beauty, especially in spring when the rhododendron forests are in bloom. Along the way, trekkers pass through small settlements and enjoy the cool mountain air, the songs of birds, and occasional glimpses of snow-capped mountains in the distance. Ghorepani is a historical village that was a halt for traders on their way with horses and is now a bustling stop for trekkers from other trails. Ghorepani is surrounded by forested hills and mountain ranges and provides basic but comfortable teahouse lodging and a peaceful ambiance in the evenings. The elevation here is high enough to experience the mountain environment but not so high as to pose a danger to most trekkers, making it a perfect spot to spend the night before embarking on the early morning trek to Poon Hill.
The major attraction of this trek is the sunrise view from Poon Hill, which reaches an altitude of 3,210 meters and provides one of the most popular views in the country. The short and steep ascent to the top of the hill in the early hours of the morning provides trekkers with the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayas, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchhre, as the first light of the sun touches the peaks. The trek then comes back to Ghorepani to have breakfast and then drops back to Ulleri by descending the trail to the village. The return journey provides the body the opportunity to recover and also allows the trekkers to enjoy the views from a different perspective while gradually descending to lower altitudes. The return journey to Pokhara by jeep from Ulleri provides the trekkers with the opportunity to return to the final destination in comfort. The itinerary provides the perfect balance of adventure and beauty within a short time frame and makes the Ghorepani and Poon Hill trek an ideal trek for first-time trekkers and families alike.
